What Do You Fear? Insisting On Hope This Advent
Luke’s Gospel begins the story of Jesus with this opening line: “In the time of Herod…” This detail may seem minor to modern readers; however, it reveals layers of information about the fearful world Jesus entered, one filled with plenty of uncertainty and instability. A world not so unlike our own. And yet, throughout the stories of Christ’s birth, the angels continue to show up with a surprising message: “Do not fear.”
But is it even possible to be fearless in a fearful world? Though fear can divide and paralyze us, what if we formed a different relationship with fear? Can we learn to acknowledge fear without letting it rule us? Might we catalyze our fears into love and action? What if naming our fears helps us see more clearly how God is breaking in and at work?
This Advent join us as we identify where fear is present—both in the Advent story and in our own lives—while also moving toward hope, with the angels’ voices in our ears.
New to First Presbyterian?
Here at First Pres, we aim to be a warm, intergenerational community of Christ followers that welcome all people (and we do mean everyone!) to worship God and grow in faith. We’re just a bunch of imperfect people, committed to following Jesus and learning how to love one another more fully. We keep the mission of our church pretty simple; love God, love one another, love neighbor, and make disciples. It might be simple, but we’ve decided that’s enough to give our lives to! We hope you’ll join us.
